The Management Assistance Group (MAG) strengthens visionary social justice organizations, leaders, and networks to create a more just world. MAG is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing organizational development consulting services to social justice groups, leaders, networks, and funders working at the local, state, national, and international level. For thirty years, MAG has pursued our mission by: (1) developing innovative approaches to strengthening organizations, leaders, and networks, (2) conducting research on critical organizational issues faced by our clients, and (3) sharing our insights and experiences with the social justice sector and the nonprofit organizational development field.
MAG believes that in order to aggregate political power and win on a broad range of progressive issues, social justice groups need to operate more effectively within and across networks and movements. Therefore, advancing social justice today and having maximum impact tomorrow requires transformation (and intervention) not only within organizations but also between organizations, within and across networks and movements, and at the level of individual leaders.
MAG is seeking a full-time Senior Consultant to join the senior core team, provide consulting services to social justice groups, and develop our growing pool of Associate Consultants. MAG operates as a virtual organization with staff working throughout the country. The Senior Consultant will work out of his/her home office and travel to client sites throughout the US and to the MAG office in Washington, DC for staff meetings 2 consecutive days per month. The Senior Consultant will be supervised by the Managing Director.
Provide Consulting Services to Social Justice Groups (50%)
- Provide one-on-one assistance to MAG clients who work on social justice issues including economic justice; reproductive justice; LGBT rights; racial justice; immigration; human rights; civil rights and liberties; and youth development.
- Lead complex change and development processes on strategy, governance, and management for clients (especially ones applying a more networked approach to their work). This includes doing overall organizational analysis; interviewing, preparing reports; facilitating meetings; coaching on the implementation of changes; and providing follow-up assistance.
- Provide assistance with the creation, facilitation and support of multi-organizational efforts, including networks, coalitions, and collaborations.
Lead the Potential Contract Process (15%)
- Lead the process of screening and landing new contracts.
- Conduct intakes with leaders seeking assistance in order to explore the nature of their organization’s needs and identify ways in which MAG may be of service to them.
- Design interventions for individual organizations and for multi-organizational efforts and match the proposed project with the best consultants to carry out the work.
- Review and finalize proposals with the consultants and the Managing Director.
- Be the main point of contact for the client during the contracting process.
Develop a Pool of Associate Consultants (15%)
- Build a strong, diverse, highly-skilled pool of Associate Consultants who can work with MAG on specific contracts.
- Design and lead a program of learning that deepens MAG’s engagement of Associate Consultants and strengthens their ability to serve MAG’s clients.
- Prepare profiles on Associate Consultants that capture their skill sets, past experience, work interests and other qualifications.
- Have initial meetings/calls with potential Associate Consultants to assess their interest in MAG’s vision, direction and approach, begin a profile, and determine if they are an appropriate match for MAG.
- Maintain regularly scheduled contact with Associate Consultants and assess how the relationship is going and where they are in their own professional development.
- Support the Associate Consultants as they complete contracts in order to ensure that a high level of quality is maintained.
- Track work performed by Associate Consultants and ensure that they are billing correctly and meeting annual goals for revenue earned by Associate Consultants.
Support MAG’s Contributions to the Field (10%)
- Assist, as part of the senior core team, MAG’s efforts to conduct research and create knowledge that builds and develops the organizational development field, leadership development field, and social justice sector.
- Help expand and enhance MAG’s practice by bringing new thinking, experiences, and approaches in order to better meet the current challenges of social justice efforts.
- Write articles, blog posts, and other types of publications to share with the field.
- Share responsibility with the senior core team for the overall strategic direction and financial health of MAG.
- Engage in MAG planning and staff meetings in order to develop and advance MAG’s vision for our contribution to social justice.
- Help develop MAG’s fundraising strategy and approach, which is led by the Managing Director.
- Follow critical internal processes for contract tracking and accounting purposes in order to ensure that MAG tracks and meets its annual goals for billable time and revenue from client fees, including submitting timesheet and expenses.
- Other work as requested.
Qualifications
- Commitment to and experience working with social justice organizations.
- 7 or more years of experience providing organizational development assistance, particularly strategy development and organizational strengthening, to social justice groups, leaders, and networks.
- Strong foundational consulting skills including ability to build relationship with clients; do intakes; conceptualize interventions; write proposals; conduct interviews; analyze data and write discussion papers; design meeting agendas; and facilitate meetings for single and multiple organizations.
- Commitment to MAG’s mission and a desire to support MAG in developing an integrated approach to strengthening social justice leaders, organizations, and multi-organizational systems operating in a networked way.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with and developing new concepts in the fields of organizational development, leadership development, network building, and/or movement building and integrating them with existing approaches.
- Experience with effectively strengthening multi-organizational systems.
- Strong ability and desire to work collaboratively with MAG’s core staff team.
- Proven ability to partner with, manage, and nurture other high-level professionals.
- Demonstrated capacity to follow administrative processes and attend to financial details.
